To the editor:
I was shocked and devastated to read of the recent violation at Evans Field that led to the destruction of the baseballs stored there. To think that someone broke into the equipment shed, ransacked it, and left our precious balls exposed to the elements.
Have we no decency left in Rockport? How can we teach our children respect for the game, when vandals are out there getting their hands on our balls, then tossing them aside like damp garbage?
The fact that someone could so casually destroy those balls should send a chill down the spine of every decent citizen in Rockport. To leave a town’s balls uncovered in a downpour is not just a crime — it’s an assault on our values.
I say to the vandals: if you had a shred of decency, you’d have covered those balls. You left them out, unprotected, dangling in the damp air, with no one to care for them. Who gets their kicks leaving someone else’s balls stewing overnight in a cold spring rain like so many soaked dreams?
Let this be a wake-up call. Rockport’s youth deserve dry, safe balls. Let’s give them nothing less.
