NEWS IN BRIEF: City Changes Motto on Mural to Reflect New Direction

The City of Gloucester unveiled a change this week to the well-known mural “The Founding of Gloucester” in City Hall’s Kyrouz Auditorium.

The quote from Franklin Delano Roosevelt featured beneath the 1934 mural, “Build not for today alone, but for tomorrow as well,” has been replaced with the quote, “Build not for today, or tomorrow. Just don’t build.”

“We think this updated motto better reflects the community’s desire to preserve Gloucester exactly as it is, or preferably as it was, or more precisely how they remember it,” said new director of community undevelopment Donna Pouch. “It’s a powerful message of cautious inertia wrapped in faux preservationism.”

Officials say the change is part of a larger initiative to “future-proof” Gloucester by ensuring nothing ever changes and nobody new moves in.
